PROMISES FROM THE PALMETTO BUSH, THE GENESIS OF CARVER RANCHES, FL
In 1940 a small town was born in unincorporated Broward County by the name of Carver Ranches. Its birth was the brainchild of a group of three White businessmen who purchased 300 acres of undeveloped land full of palmetto bushes. Oddly enough, they only sold property to black folks. So you see, Carver Ranches was a planned black community from the start.
I don’t know the reason why they sold to blacks only. I do know that the early settlers met the unknown that awaited them with courage. I do know they relied on a good God, good times, and good neighbors to help them make it through the rough times.
Also, I know they left a solid foundation for us to continue to build upon.
Forty-three pioneer families share their compelling stories and treasured photographs. This documentary comes at a time of new beginnings. In 2005 Carver Ranches was combined with three other unincorporated areas, Lake Forest; Miami Gardens; and Utopia, to form the 31st city of Broward County, West Park.
